How To Sharpen Cleanly in Photoshop Without White or Black Edging

When we sharpen our images in Photoshop, the software looks for edges throughout our image, and attempts to exaggerate those edges. By doing so this gives the effect of sharpening. However, the downside of that is that we often end up with black or white edging around certain objects, the stronger the sharpening effect. We can always mask out these areas but there is a quicker, more accurate way.

The method in today’s tutorial won’t work with every scene, but it can be incredibly effective with many. Essentially we are finding the larger edges in our scene and subtracting them from the sharpening process. We do this with a combination of the Channels palette and Photoshop’s Find Edge filter. Then we just use Unsharp Mask, or whichever sharpening method you use.

  1. Thanks Jimmy for the tip. It’s awsome!
I can finally remove these awfull egdes after sharpening.

  2. I am so excited to see someone using the Surface Pro 4 to edit with. I just got one last week and I’m still pretty clumsy with it. I look forward to future tutorials with it. Thank you for the awesome sharpening action too!

  3. Looking forward to the surface pro review and use. Almost ready to pull the trigger and get one…then I heard surface pro 5 is due…bugger.

  4. Very nice, however, I downloaded the Action and it opens in Photoshop CS6 Extended not in the latest Photoshop CC 2015.5

  5. As I previously commented, it’s a great concept but one would imagine that it would be designed to open in the latest version of Photoshop, to wit, PhotoshopCC 2015.5 not an outdated version. Just saying….

    1. Hi there, this will install in whichever program you choose. Just open PS CC and load the actions into the actions dialogue as usual and that should be it 🙂

      Thanks
      Jimmy
